Course → Module 2: How Google Recognizes Companies
Session 3 of 7

When someone types your company name into Google, that act sends a signal: a real person knows this company exists and is looking for it. This is branded search, and it is one of the strongest indicators of entity legitimacy that Google tracks.

Branded search volume is not just a vanity metric. It is a direct input into Google's entity confidence calculation. Higher branded search volume tells Google: this entity is real, people know about it, and they seek it out by name.

What Branded Search Tells Google

Google has confirmed that branded search is a factor in its entity understanding systems. When branded search volume reaches a sufficient threshold, Google has more incentive to build and maintain a Knowledge Graph entry for that entity.

If nobody searches for your name, Google has less reason to recognize you as an entity. Branded search is proof of existence that Google cannot ignore.

Measuring Your Branded Search

You can measure branded search through two primary tools:

ToolWhat It ShowsPrecisionCost
Google Search ConsoleExact queries containing your brand name, impressions, clicks, CTRHigh (your own data)Free
Google TrendsRelative search interest over time, compared to other termsMedium (relative, not absolute)Free
Google Ads Keyword PlannerEstimated monthly search volume for brand name queriesMedium (ranges, not exact)Free (with Ads account)
Third-party tools (Semrush, Ahrefs)Estimated branded search volume and trendsMediumPaid

Google Search Console is the most reliable source because it shows actual queries and impressions for your website. Filter the Performance report for queries containing your brand name. The total impressions for branded queries is your branded search baseline.

Branded Search and the Entity Feedback Loop

Branded search creates a positive feedback loop with entity recognition:

  1. You build entity infrastructure (schema, GBP, citations).
  2. Google begins recognizing your entity, showing more structured results.
  3. More people see your brand in search results and remember it.
  4. More people search for your brand name directly.
  5. Google's confidence in your entity increases.
  6. Your entity gets stronger structured results. Return to step 3.

This loop takes time to start, but once it begins, it compounds. The first branded search improvement may take 3-6 months of entity infrastructure work. After that, each improvement accelerates the next.

Branded Search vs. Non-Branded Search

The ratio between branded and non-branded search tells you something about your entity's maturity:

A business with 5% branded search traffic has almost no entity recognition. A business with 40-60% branded search traffic has strong entity presence. If your branded search is below 15%, entity infrastructure should be your top priority, because you are building on a foundation that Google barely recognizes.

How to Increase Branded Search

Branded search is largely organic, driven by real people who know your name. You cannot buy it directly. But you can influence it:

Notice that these are all traditional marketing activities. Entity infrastructure does not replace marketing. It ensures that when marketing generates branded searches, Google is ready to recognize and reward them.

Assignment

Use Google Trends to check your company's branded search volume. Compare it to a competitor. Then check Google Search Console for branded queries: searches containing your company name. Calculate what percentage of your total impressions come from branded queries. If the number is near zero, you have a critical entity signal gap. Document the numbers.
