I gave a talk last year at a manufacturing conference. Forty minutes on stage. Slide deck I had built over two weekends. Standard stuff.

Three months later, that single talk had generated: one speaking page with Event schema, one long essay, five microcontent notes, one Zenodo deposit with a DOI, one set of social posts, and enough material to keep my publishing schedule alive through the quarter.

Seven pieces of content from one appearance.

Most speakers walk off stage and move on. The talk lives in their memory and maybe a LinkedIn post that says "Grateful for the opportunity to share at [event]." That is it. That is the whole return on a talk they spent days preparing.

This essay lays out the exact pipeline I use. Every step. Every format. Every timeline.

Why this matters for entity infrastructure

Every content piece you produce from a talk reinforces a different verification signal. The speaking page with Event schema tells Google you were invited by a third party. The Zenodo deposit gives you a DOI, a permanent citation from CERN's repository. The essay demonstrates depth. The notes feed social channels. Together, these create what I call a content multiplication loop, where a single real-world event generates multiple machine-verifiable artifacts.

Key concept: A speaking engagement is not a content piece. It is a content source. The talk itself is raw material. Your job is to process it into seven distinct formats, each optimized for a different verification channel.

The pipeline: one talk, seven outputs

Here is the full flow. One speaking engagement enters at the top. Seven content pieces come out over the following 12 weeks.

Now let me walk through each output.

Output 1: The speaking page

This goes live within 48 hours of the event. It is a dedicated page on your site with:

  • Event name, date, venue, organizer
  • Your talk title and abstract
  • Event schema markup (JSON-LD with @type: Event and performer)
  • Photo from the event (even a phone photo works)
  • Embedded video if the organizer recorded it
  • Link to your Zenodo deposit (once uploaded)

The schema is the important part. When Google's crawlers encounter Event schema with you as performer, it registers as third-party verification. Someone invited you. That is a peer recognition signal, not a self-claim. I wrote about this in detail in the speaking SEO essay.

Output 2: The Zenodo deposit

Take your slide deck. Export to PDF. Upload to Zenodo. You get a DOI.

A DOI is a Digital Object Identifier, the same system academic papers use. Zenodo is run by CERN and OpenAIRE. When you deposit your slides there, you get a permanent citation link that looks like 10.5281/zenodo.XXXXXXX. This is not a Dropbox link that might break. This is an institutional-grade persistent identifier.

I covered the full Zenodo workflow in my DOI essay. The short version: create a Zenodo account, upload the PDF, fill in the metadata (title, description, your ORCID, event name as related identifier), select "Presentation" as resource type, publish. Takes fifteen minutes.

Why bother? Because AI search engines treat DOIs as high-trust sources. When Perplexity or Gemini encounters a DOI pointing to your slide deck, it registers differently than a random PDF on your website. It is institutional. It is permanent. It is verifiable. And it links back to you as the creator.

Timeline: upload within the first week after the talk, while the metadata is fresh in your head.

Output 3: The long essay

Your slide deck already has a structure. It has a thesis, supporting points, examples, and a conclusion. That is an essay outline.

But do not just transcribe the talk. A talk and an essay serve different purposes. The talk is optimized for a room, for energy, for holding attention when people's phones are vibrating. The essay is optimized for depth, for search, for people who want to understand the nuance you had to skip on stage.

What I do:

  1. Pull the core argument from the talk. Write it as a single sentence.
  2. Identify the 3-4 supporting points I covered on stage.
  3. For each point, write 400-600 words. This is where you add the context, data, and examples that didn't fit in 40 minutes.
  4. Add an FAQ section targeting long-tail queries related to the topic.
  5. Add references. Real ones. Not "according to experts."
  6. Cross-link to existing content on your site.

The essay should go live 2-4 weeks after the talk. Not immediately. You want the speaking page and Zenodo deposit to be indexed first, so the essay can link to both and complete the loop.

The distinction between notes and essays matters here. I plan to cover that in a separate piece on when to write a note vs. a full essay. Short version: if the idea needs more than 280 characters to make its point, it is an essay. If it can stand as a single observation, it is a note.

Output 4: Five microcontent notes

Every talk has throwaway lines that get the biggest reaction. The one-liners. The observations that make people nod or pull out their phones.

These are your notes.

I extract five of them from every talk. Each one is under 280 characters. Each one works as a standalone piece of content. They go into my notes archive on the site, and they double as social media posts.

Examples from past talks:

  • "A DOI from Zenodo costs nothing and lasts forever. Your Dropbox link will be dead in three years."
  • "Speaking pages are not vanity. They are third-party verification that someone thought you were worth inviting."
  • "If your talk didn't generate at least three pieces of written content, you wasted the prep time."

Space these out. One per week over five weeks gives you consistent publishing without writing anything new.

Output 5: Social posts

Separate from the notes on your site. Social posts are platform-native. A LinkedIn post about the talk. An X thread breaking down the key points. A carousel if you are into that.

The social posts link back to your speaking page, your essay, or your Zenodo deposit. Every post is a pointer to an artifact that lives on infrastructure you control.

I usually do one LinkedIn post in the first week (the "I just spoke at X" post), then a thread 3-4 weeks later when the essay goes live, then individual note-style posts over the following weeks.

Output 6: Backlink outreach

After the event, the organizer often publishes a recap. They might list speakers, link to slides, or write a summary post. If they don't link to your speaking page, ask. Politely. Most organizers are happy to add the link because it makes their recap more complete.

Same with co-speakers. If you referenced their work in your talk, let them know. People link back to people who cite them.

This is not some aggressive link-building campaign. It is basic professional courtesy that happens to generate domain authority.

Output 7: Internal cross-links

Every new piece of content is an opportunity to strengthen your existing content. When the essay goes live, go back to 2-3 older essays and add a contextual link to the new one. Update the links_to arrays. Run the reindexer.

This is how you build topical authority over time. Not by publishing in isolation, but by connecting everything into a graph where each node reinforces the others.

The timeline

Here is when each piece should go live, relative to the talk date:

Total active effort after the talk: maybe 8-10 hours spread over 12 weeks. Most of it front-loaded in the first two weeks.

The math

If you speak at four events per year, this pipeline gives you:

  • 4 speaking pages with Event schema
  • 4 DOIs on Zenodo
  • 4 long essays (8,000-14,000 words of depth content)
  • 20 microcontent notes
  • Multiple social posts per quarter
  • A growing graph of interlinked content

Four talks. Twenty-eight pieces of content. Twelve months of consistent publishing.

And every single piece points back to a real event where a real organizer invited you to share your expertise. That is not content marketing. That is documentation of practice.

Why most speakers don't do this

Because it feels like a lot of work. And it is, if you try to do it all at once.

The trick is the timeline. You are not creating seven things in one week. You are creating one thing now (the speaking page), another thing this week (the Zenodo upload), and spacing the rest over three months. At any given point, you are doing maybe 30 minutes of work.

The other reason is that most speakers think the talk is the product. It is not. The talk is the raw material. The products are everything you make from it afterward. The slide deck sitting in your Google Drive folder is an asset rotting in storage. Put it on Zenodo. Write about it. Break it into notes. Make the preparation count beyond the 40 minutes you were on stage.

A note on quality

This is not about churning out content for the sake of publishing cadence. Every piece in the pipeline should stand on its own. The essay should be worth reading even if the reader never saw your talk. The notes should be insightful, not just recycled slide titles. The Zenodo deposit should have proper metadata.

If the talk wasn't good, the pipeline won't save it. Garbage in, garbage out. This system works because a well-prepared talk already contains the seeds of multiple pieces of good content. You are just harvesting them deliberately instead of letting them rot.

Getting started

If you have a talk coming up, here is what to do:

  1. Build your slides as usual. Don't change your preparation process.
  2. After the talk, create the speaking page within 48 hours. Use Event schema.
  3. Export your slides to PDF. Upload to Zenodo. Get your DOI.
  4. Write down the 5 best one-liners from your talk. These are your notes.
  5. Two weeks later, start writing the essay. Use the slide structure as your outline.
  6. Publish one note per week for the next five weeks.
  7. Cross-link everything to your existing content.

If you have already given talks in the past and never extracted content from them, start there. Dig up the slide decks. Upload them to Zenodo. Write the speaking pages. You can still build the pipeline retroactively. The events already happened. The verification is real. You are just documenting it.


Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a keynote speaker for this to work?

No. A 20-minute breakout session generates the same content artifacts as a keynote. The pipeline works with any speaking slot where you prepared material and an organizer invited you. Panel discussions are harder to extract from because you share the stage, but even there you can write about your specific points and create a speaking page.

Can I upload slides to Zenodo if the event organizer didn't record the talk?

Yes. Zenodo accepts presentation slides as a standalone resource type. You don't need a video recording. The slide deck PDF with proper metadata (event name, date, your ORCID) is sufficient. The DOI applies to the slides themselves, not to a recording.

What if my talk was in a language other than English?

Zenodo supports multiple languages, and you should upload in the original language. For the essay, you have a choice: write in the same language as the talk, or write an English version that reaches a broader audience. If you do both, that is two essays from one talk, which makes the pipeline even more productive.

How is this different from normal content repurposing?

Normal repurposing is about formats. Turn a blog post into a video, turn a video into tweets. This pipeline is about verification signals. Each output targets a different trust channel: Event schema for third-party verification, DOI for institutional permanence, essay for topical depth, cross-links for authority graph density. It is not just making content. It is building entity infrastructure.

What if I only speak once or twice a year?

Then this pipeline is even more important. Two talks per year, fully processed, give you 14 pieces of content. That is more than one piece per month, just from two events. Supplement with a few standalone essays and notes, and you have a complete publishing calendar without having to generate topics from scratch.
